Understanding Mindfulness

In a discussion concerning mindfulness-based relapse prevention techniques, it is helpful to have a working definition of mindfulness itself. Mindfulness can be defined as having full awareness of what is going on in your environment in the present moment. When you are mindful, you are fully present and aware, and you accept what is in your environment at face value. You acknowledge what you feel in the moment, accept it for what it is, and simply let it pass without judgment.

Mindfulness and relapse prevention go hand in hand because as we recover, the old addicted mind will try anything to slip you up. The triggers and cravings of your environment can throw you off balance and scatter your thoughts. In those vulnerable moments, you can turn to MBRP techniques to center your thoughts, accept your feelings and vulnerabilities, and let them pass so you can focus on the here and now.

What Are Common Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention Techniques?

For many people in recovery, mindfulness for relapse prevention includes the practice of meditation. Mindfulness meditation is effective because it only requires 10-15 minutes of your day and can be done at home, at work, or anywhere you can find peace and quiet. Meditation practices include mindful breathing and can include more formal meditation practices.

However, mindfulness can be used in other parts of your daily life, such as the following practices:

  • Mindful eating: The next time you sit down to eat, slow down and focus on each bite you take of your food. When you chew, learn to savor the taste of whatever you are eating. Make note of the texture and the flavors. When you do so, you are better able to focus your attention on the present
  • Mindful walking: Another mindfulness-based relapse prevention technique you can incorporate into your daily routine is mindful walking, or walking meditation. To perform this form of meditation, choose a secluded spot that is peaceful and find a space where you can walk 10-15 paces comfortably. Walk 10-15 steps, then pause and breathe for any length you like. When you are ready, you can turn back around and repeat.
  • Mindful listening: With listening meditation, simply listen to the sounds in your environment as they occur. When you hear these sounds, let them come to you and imagine yourself getting inside the sounds. Be sure not to label or place judgment on these sounds; simply accept them for what they are in that moment and let them pass.
